Women Talk Money
Bio: Allison Acken, Ph. D.

Allison Acken grew up in a record store in Baltimore, Maryland. She learned how to work a cash register and make change at age 8, but, like many women, she never learned how to handle her own money. The mother of two daughters, Allison became a single parent and a graduate student at the same moment. By 1981, she had earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and a $50,000 debt. Allison now knows the subject of women and money from the inside out.

When she was a little girl, Allison had an image of herself as a writer with her hair in a bun and wearing large tortoise shell glasses. When she grew up, she thought her first book would be a murder mystery. If you had told her that she would write about money, she would have laughed out loud. However, her own experiences with money, and her clients’ issues with money, led her to do just that.

Today, Allison is the author of It's Only Money: A Primer for Women and She Said…He Said: Money-quotes for Women; founder of womentalkmoney.com; freelance writer and Contributing Editor of Making Bread, the magazine for women who need dough; and a clinical psychologist in private practice based in Los Angeles.

She has just completed a new book, co-authored by psychologist and coach Clara Farah, taking a light, but thought-provoking, approach to the emotional issues that keep men and women at odds about money. The goal is to start a positive conversation about money between the sexes.

Allison is currently at work on a grandmother’s guide to money for kids. She has future plans for a children's book with Children's Librarian and writer, Christine Dunn. The mystery will have to wait.
